Feng Shui (pronounced fung shway) is a 3,000 year old Chinese process that involves adapting your surroundings or environment to help you attract more positive energy, or chi, into your life.

Feng Shui is looked upon by some as a sort of pseudo science. However, beyond the basic guiding principles is the underlying fundamental assumption that clearing away your mental and physical clutter while bringing in elements of joy, peace and harmony will help improve all aspects of your life. When looked at in that light, how can incorporating these feng shui tips not help you?

Feng Shui means the wind and the water, two of the core elements in Chinese lore. It follows the philosophy that individuals are more or less affected by the surroundings they are in. If you can improve your surroundings, you can improve various aspects of your life.

Along with the basic feng shui guidelines it is essential that you incorporate a willingness to believe that what you are doing will help you. Do you know which corner of your house is designated as the wealth corner according to feng shui principles?

Wealth can be found in the southeast corner of your home or office. You will need to find the southeast corner of each room. You need to include the bathroom, garage and basement if those are involved. If you have more than one floor you must locate the southeast corner of every floor. The important southeast corners of your home are the bedroom, living room, bathrooms, and kitchen. These are the places where we spend most of our time.

As a result, it might be a good idea to add some water elements in the southeast corner of your rooms. Having said that, some feng shui authorities note that certain geographical areas are better served with certain colors.

While we don't want to get bogged down in the details just know that while the feng shui wealth corner is in the southeast, that the south as a whole is often represented by the element of fire. Hence, without getting too carried away, you might want to limit the water flow to the southeast corner so as not to douse the fire element, often said to represent your own inner fire.

The use of feng shui colors is another consideration when applying feng shui principles to your home or office. For instance, red and green represent the colors of wealth. If you can, place red flowers in your home. These can be real or silk. Also, have live green plants in as many rooms as possible. Not only is this great at bringing the beauty of nature inside, but it can also increase oxygen levels in your house, contributing to your energy level. Bamboo Deer Scarer Fountains (shishi Odoshi)

The deer scarer is one of the most interesting water features a person can place in his garden. Also known as a deer chaser or shishi odoshi, it is a rocking fountain that combines sound and motion to create a compelling water feature. People often mistake these as perpetual motion machines, as they  use gravity to rock up and down, but they need a pump to operate. What can make them “perpetual” is the addition of a solar pump.

The fountain's bamboo arm rocks forward when it fills with water, then rocks back to make a gentle clacking sound as it knocks against a rock or piece of bamboo. Originally used to scare deer (not guaranteed to do this!), the deer scarer provides hours of enjoyment and conversation.

We have tried quite a few through the years with varied success. Some weren't plumbed and required lots of drilling. Most filled with water after a few days and frequently got stuck, no longer rocking. They were all hard to mount. After a few months, the bamboo started to crack.

Some companies now sell resin ones. The advantage is more control and consistency of material. The disadvantage is obvious: they’re plastic! The ones made of Vietnamese bamboo seem more resistant to cracking than the ones we sold in the past.  Also, it is wise to buy deer scarers that are sealed so they don't fill up with water and get stuck. And a mounting "board" will help to keep them in place. Otherwise, they will need to be set in mortar or concrete to keep them steady.

If you want to, there are place on the internet that offer advice on making these yourself. It will take several hours to make your first one, but if you have the time and patience and might be rewarding. If not, you might want to but one of the quality-tested ones available online.

Hardy lilies usually start to bloom sometime in the month of May, and continue to grace your water garden with beautiful color and fragrance until about the end of September. Before purchasing your hardy lilies, it may be a good idea to check with your local garden supply to make certain that your climate can accommodate them nicely.

Like hardy lilies, tropical lilies also come in an array of color and sizes. Tropical lilies only thrive in areas where the average temperature is around seventy degrees, so keep this in consideration when choosing them for your water garden. Some tropical lilies, unlike most flowers, bloom at night instead of early morning, giving them an added interest factor.

Floating plants also make for an appealing water garden. Floating plants seemingly sit on top of the water, their roots hidden well below the water's surface. Due to the extra shade that floating plants provide, they help to greatly reduce algae in your garden pond in the summer. As with all aquatic plants, take your climate into careful consideration before purchasing.

When it comes to adding fish to your water garden, goldfish seem to be the fish of choice. They come in a wide variety of colors and types. Goldfish are also the most economical fish to add to your water garden, as they are fairly inexpensive, and live for a long time, even in colder climates. You need to decide when planning your water garden whether or not you want to include fish, as they require much deeper water to survive than do aquatic plants. It is also important to consider your climate and normal temperature ranges, so that you can purchase the right fish for your garden pond. Fish sometimes can be very fragile, and don't adapt well to sudden drops or increases in temperature or changes in their environment.

For any fish to survive in your water pond, you will need to ensure the water remains at the correct ph level, and that there is no contamination from yard debris, or runoff.

When adding your goldfish to your water garden, let them float in the bag you purchased them in on the ponds surface so that they can adjust to the water temperature. This process usually takes about half an hour. After they have had time to adjust to their surroundings, then carefully release the goldfish into the water garden.

If you have aquatic plants in your water garden along with your goldfish, then there is probably no need to give them additional food. They will live off of the plants, algae, and insects that also inhabit the water garden.

Koi ponds are also popular, but keep in mind, that koi are known to eat many types of aquatic plants, so if put koi in your water garden, you may not have anything else. You need to have a larger space to accommodate koi, because they are quite large. Koi tend to make good pets, as you can actually train them to eat straight from your hand, much as you might with a new puppy. Koi bring a taste of the exotic to any water garden. Unlike goldfish, you do need to feed your koi, as they cannot live solely from the environment. You can purchase automated feeders to install in your water garden, which will take care of your koi for you. Koi are not as fairly priced as goldfish, and can become quite expensive, depending on the particular variety you select.

Regardless of what you decide to put in your water garden, whether it is plant life, goldfish, or koi, it will definitely be a source of enjoyment for you and your family for many years to come. The gentle trickling sound of flowing water is extremely relaxing and can quickly ease the stresses of the day, bringing a much-needed feeling of serenity to your indoor space. While indoor wall fountains do come in a wide variety of materials, one of the most beautiful by far is copper. Copper wall fountains will compliment virtually any décor with their warm, natural, earthy feel that cannot be matched by water features produced in other materials.

Copper wall fountains can be left unsealed which allows the metal to take on the stunning aged copper look it is famous for with its many stainings any variegations, or if a more uniform, pristine copper is preferred, it can be sealed to retain its virgin, original coloring. Generally, only the outer frame of a fountain is made using the copper and the center where the water runs down is made from a different backing material, which adds a striking contrast, bringing another design element into the fountain. Some of the more common materials used in the center of copper wall fountains are natural stone, pebbles, glass gems, slate, or another type of metal. Adding textural elements such as pebbles, stones, or gems will provide a varied surface for the water to run over, which creates an even more beautiful flow of water.

Copper wall fountains will typically come fitted with both a top and a bottom splashguard. These will help to prevent any of the water from escaping from the fountain and landing on your floor or walls, which could prevent mold or mildew.

One of copper’s many benefits, of course, is that it is a lightweight material, which is fairly essential for a wall fountain. If you choose a fountain made of a material that is too heavy, you will have much difficulty hanging it; however, most copper wall fountains are really very light and can be hung in just about any home or office. When you hand your wall fountain, you will, of course, need to locate the studs in your wall to attach it to in order to ensure that it is well supported and won’t fall from the wall.

Copper wall fountains work by having a small pump hidden in a tray at the bottom of the fountain. You add the water to the base of your fountain and then turn the pump on. It will then pump the water up a small hidden tube to the top of the fountain where it will trickle back down over the face of the fountain into the basin. The water is re-circulated and will not need to be changed or refilled very often, which makes wall fountains quite low maintenance and easy to enjoy.

Regardless of your décor, a copper wall fountain can be an extraordinary addition to your home or office. Because copper is so versatile, these fountains can range anywhere from modern to rustic and everything in between. Different finishes, backing materials and designs can all give a copper fountain to perfectly match whatever style you’re looking for.

Prior to discovering the art of digital design my most common phrase used was , “Just trust me.” Wait till your pond and waterfall is finished, I promise you’ll like it. Unfortunately, “trust me” are the most common two words spoken by used car salesmen! Thank goodness that most of my clients were referrals from other satisfied customers and already knew what I was capable of creating. Imagine a referral customer base of over 1,900 satisfied clients.

A few years ago I discovered a computer program called Photo Shop and realized I could use it to create virtual photos of water features. I learned how to cut an item from one picture and paste it into another. Actually, that was nothing new for me since I did that in third grade. It’s called cut and paste. Only now I’m using a mouse instead of rounded scissors and edible white paste. (I hear the manufactures are adding vitamins to it now.

I started out scanning dozens of photographs into “Photo Shop,” which converted them into a digital image capable of being manipulated in hundreds or thousands of ways. The Photo Shop program has a large learning curve, especially for someone who is unfamiliar with graphic design techniques, so I started searching for a solution for my pond design department.

DIGITIZING PHOTOS

Microsoft has developed a user-friendly software (small learning curve) for working with photographs. They can be scanned into the program or digital photos from a digi-tal camera can be downloaded into the program. Then each picture can be enhanced through a variety of processes such as brightness, contrast, blur, tint, etc., all with a simple click of the mouse. Once the photo is finished, I can then cut out objects from the picture, such as rocks, groups of rocks, plants, or portions of the waterfall and pond. Which I did from several thousand photos of waterfalls and ponds I have constructed over the past 26 years. I gathered these jpg images into an indexed library.

Using this process with pictures from hundreds of my projects, I was able to build a substantial library of objects for pasting into the “before” photo of a client’s yard for a pond design. Now I can take a digital picture of someone’s yard and download it into Microsoft’s “Digital Image Suite ” program. Next, by dragging various items from my library, I can construct a waterfall and pond of any shape, size or configuration onto that picture.

So thanks to the arrival of the digital age, I can construct on paper a virtual image or idea that was in my head. As a result, my clients can see exactly what their pond and waterfall will look like when finished. Now a pond design takes only minutes. Whether you are building a waterfall and pond for yourself or for a customer a pond design or waterfall design can be a marvelous thing. Simply marvelous! Happy koi, peace & joy

The Trevi Water Fountain of Rome, Italy

The Trevi Water Fountain, which stands in the Trevi Rione at 85 feet in height and 65 feet in width, is the largest and, quite possibly, the most famous Baroque fountain located in Rome, Italy. This majestic fountain is found at what was once the junction of the three roads that marks the spot where the modern Acqua Vergine aquaduct that supplied water to the city ended. Being at the crossing of three roads gives the Trevi Water Fountain its name, which was taken from tre vie. The Acqua Vergine is known as the revivified Aqua Virgo, which is one of the ancient aqueducts that supplied ancient Rome with water.

The stories that can be seen on the present fountain’s façade tell of Roman technicians locating sources of pure water with the help of virgins in 19 BC. The original fountain was built by Pope Nicholas V in the mid 1400s as a simple basin. Over time, as requested by Pope Urban VII who evidently didn’t care for the fountain’s original design, the ordinary fountain was reconstructed into the stunning piece of artwork seen today. Before his death, Pope Urban VIII’s architect had the fountain moved to the opposite side of the main square so he could see it from his room. Once dead, the project was left forgotten and was not completed until Pope Clement XII, in the early 1700s held a contest to determine a new design so the project could be completed.

The work on the current Trevi Water Fountain, done by Nicola Slavi, began in 1732, but was not completed until 1762. For the next 236 years the famous fountain remained essentially untouched, but in 1998, the stonework was cleaned and the pumps used to recirculate the water were replaced with some that could do the job more effectively and efficiently.

As with so many fountains, people are inclined to throw coins into the Trevi Water Founain in Rome, but one must be aware of and observe the few longstanding traditions that come to hurling coins into the sparkling water that tumbles, then pools in its basin. The first traditional belief is that you will have an opportunity of returning to Rome for a second visit if you throw in just a single coin. It is often believed that throwing two coins in will result in finding true love. And, three coins thrown into the fountain will guarantee the thrower the marriage or divorce he’s after – whichever he thinks he needs at the time.

You can use your creativity to make your pond look special. If you are using a small fountain, main creativity lies in the selection of the container. In case of a pond, you can put fish and plants according to the climate of your area. You can place decorative plants and some beautiful statues around it. You can also use stones to make an interesting addition to the surrounding greenery.
